Many people I met were telling me they hated their jobs

Were these people chronic complainers? Some were but many were individuals who truly had a lot to give and wanted more from their jobs. More fulfillment and more purpose in their lives. I felt that through a coach training certification program, I could offer them a new beginning. I could help them realize their dreams of a new career or a new start in life. Many have since gained the tools to start their own businesses.

So what kind of training should I offer? I didn’t want to offer just another coach one-o-one training program. I wanted to provide people with the opportunity to expand their learning and gain sound personal and professional development. This way, they could become the very best coaches with advanced skills that allowed them to be flexible in their practice thus able to work with a wider range of clients. I am happy to say that most of the learners who entered the WIS coach institute have had their dreams fulfilled. Some have even had transformation of heart and learnt to love their jobs. I now have a real, full proof option for those I meet who hate their jobs.

Are you looking to do something great in 2015? You too can learn how to coach others who hate their jobs or a looking for a career change or just need a new beginning. Many retirees are becoming coaches so keep that in mind if you are just finishing your career.

Stop the Pain in Your Life!

Why do people withdraw when they are in pain or facing difficult situations in their lives? This past week, I met two individuals who told me they recently went through a very difficult time in their lives. When we are going through tough painful episodes in life, we often go into isolation mode. This is the wrong approach that keeps us in a state of negative trance or limiting thoughts. During these times, the best course of action is to reach out to a trusted professional or friend to gain a different perspective, share how you are feeling with someone who can hold keep your confidence and positively stimulate you out of your low point. Gossip is the last thing you want to be dealing with when you are in pain so ensure they can hold your confidence. You don’t have to suffer pain and heartache alone.

Find someone who can help you think outside the box, often the answer(s) to your problem is waiting for you to pose the right question and its waiting just outside the box that hold your problems. I want to encourage you today, no matter what you are going through if you change the focus of your thoughts and engage in a positive discussion, you will find yourself gaining some clarity and momentum. We have a form on our website that people complete when they are not sure whether to stay in pain or move forward with support. You are welcome to complete too. It may help you gain some clarity for yourself. Click this link to get help to assess your situation. There is no obligation to filling out this form. We will only call you if you tell us to call you.

Coaching allows employees to thrive Part 1

Ever had an employee with really great technical skills but has self-esteem and other interpersonal issues where he is unable to sell himself or engage with a team in an effective way? How does a manager work with an employee like this? Do you say: “Jim you need to work on your self-esteem issues”? You may try but this will not get you or Jim very far. You are likely to alienate Jim with this approach, as he will become defensive and claim not to have an issue. He is likely to resist your suggestions to improve or he will not know the first step of where to begin working on his these issues. If Jim is open, you may even suggest a book that he should read and he very well may try all the things written in the book you suggest. However, until Jim has had opportunity to become aware of the way he thinks about his actions and their impact there is very little change that can happen. I see many Jim’s in my work as a workplace wellness expert and coach. In my role, I help Jim to reflect on his current situation, visualize where he wants to go and to identify any thoughts or actions that may be getting in his way. This puts Jim in the driver’s seat for self-awareness to happen. As Jim maps out where he is and where he wants to go, he becomes aware of what else he can or should do to thrive. Jim becomes connected and enthusiastic about his own transformation, leaving me open to help him clarify his thoughts and try on new perspectives that best matches his new outlook. We will look are part II of how coaching allows employees to thrive next time.

Sexual Wellness at Work

This blog post is in response to a colleague who challenged me to address sexual wellness as an important interpersonal skill that affects human interpersonal wellness. According to him, most of the interpersonal conflicts and challenges in our world have troubling elements of sexual distortions. He argues that if we had a higher level of consciousness about sex, the world would be a much happier and peaceful place. I agree with him, that distorted thinking and beliefs about sex is a key factor in most sexual harassment complaints, workplace conflicts and incidents in which I have intervened.

Over the last few years, I have conducted several sexual harassment investigations. With an increase of diversity in the workplace, there are diverse perspectives on sexual correctness. Left unaddressed for too long, these issues escalate at an alarming rate. Lately, I’ve been encountering sexual misconduct in all ages and groups. After spending years analyzing the issues and actions of sexual misconduct leading up to a complaint, I realize that organizations need to clearly define their expectations of sexual correctness in the workplace.

Failure to do so is to imply that everyone has the same beliefs or values about sex. Too often issues arise that go unacknowledged, allowing them to escalate further. The following is an example of varying understandings of sexual correctness in the workplace:

A female employee is accosted by her male co-worker. He is upset that she is spending time with another male co-worker, apparently had she spent a great deal of time with during his recent divorce, he is upset that she is sharing her time with other co-workers.

A manager shared dirty sex jokes with his female employees that left them feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable in his presence.

An executive on a business trip went out for drinks with a female colleague after their meeting, she later filed a sexual harassment complaint; though there is no allegation of impropriety, she claimed to have felt coerced to attend.

Sarah wears very short dresses to the office that leave nothing to the imagination, a customer propositioned her. Said she reminded him of his play thing.

Dan calls Joan, “darling” and “sweet thing” and propositions her even after she told him she was married and didn’t appreciate his endearments. He claimed this is the way he talks to women.

Sexual misinterpretations, confusion and tensions have increasingly become a problem in workplaces over the years. How is a workplace to address issues of sexual wellness? All your employees come to the job with different perspectives on sex and sexual correctness, which includes propositioning and accessing sex. It is your responsibility to set the appropriate sexual wellness tone in your organization.

The Workplace Wellness Assistance Program® (WWAP) offers support to organizations on defining and setting a sexual correctness tone to improve sexual wellness at work.

Here are some tips to improve the sexual wellness culture at work; use clear guidelines, policies and procedures that acknowledge the problem, create awareness and educate employees on what is expected. Create dialogue to foster understanding and encourage compliance.

If you are looking for open dialogue on sexual wellness at work this fall, I would be happy to help you facilitate the process effectively.

Life Coaching for Workplaces

Wondering if there is a need for life coaching within workplaces? The workplace is where people spend most of their waking hours and it is a place where their interpersonal skills as well as their talents are on display. As a Conflict Analyst and Coach, I have come to realize that many people lack the structures at home to support new behaviour. In conversation with a human resources professional last week, she commented that employees don’t want to deal with disrespect and poor behaviour at work anymore and are complaining more often and filing more grievances. This is why I promote life coaching at work, given the countless opportunities for learning that employees relate to their employability.

Some years ago, I developed a comprehensive holistic coaching program that allows for professional and life coaching to be brought to employees in a package through the WIS Workplace Wellness Coaching. It allows employees to assess how well they are doing in nine life dimensions, providing them and their coach with the information necessary to create a coaching plan for their work and life. Our slogan is work well, live well and play well. Our workplace wellness programs allow us to provide coaching support to the clients in the areas they have assessed to be in need, this allows us to offer a targeted work and life coaching support, so they can work and live well.

Are you looking for support to work and live optimally? Our work with clients is geared to improve all areas of their life to create balance and resilience. The WIS Wellness assessment is a great way to determine your goals in life coaching. Take the free wellness assessment here

Joyce

Balance

Are you living a balanced life?

Many of us rush through our days without any focus or direction. We often forget to align our daily actions with our end goals. As a result we find ourselves overwhelmed, fearful, uncertain, angry, frustrated and disillusioned. Balance means having purpose to your life and your daily activities. It means putting first things first and it means starting with picture in mind of what you want to accomplish.

Here are some tips to help you regain balance

  • Set your intention for your day the night before and decide on the course you must take.
  • Give yourself the appropriate amount of time to do tasks and remember why you need to take this action.
  • Plan your meals. You are not a machine and therefore need to eat healthy nutritious meals.
  • Plan your work day and plan for contingencies.
  • Plan breaks and begin a habit of taking them.
  • Set reminders in your phone to keep you focused on what’s important
  • Begin a daily positive affirmation

Give yourself a break if you are not feeling well or need to just chill but don’t let it go on indefinitely, that’s where things begin to fall apart and balance goes out the window. Even if you are really busy, squeeze the time in for self-care, you won’t regret it.
