Over the years, clients have asked me about Career Coaching, what it is and why would one choose to engage a career coach? Career coaching is an interactive process of exploring work-related issues that will lead to effective action. The role of the career coach is to be a facilitator for change. This means that the coach can be a catalyst of development and transformation for the client organization or its employees. A career coach can be employed by an organization to help employees become equipped for growth and development, transition into another department or position or in preparation for new responsibilities or duties. Career coaching can also be towards finding avenues for career mobility or to find employment outside the company.

Some employees have sought career coaching to help them identify where they may be holding themselves back. This is not uncommon as employees often find themselves being passed over for promotion or other rewards, it is important for them to seek answers by first looking at themselves, their underlying beliefs about themselves and how this may be affecting their workplace attitudes. Ongoing frequent disagreements at work and some other interpersonal challenges are great areas to explore in career coaching as they may be a sign that you are not fully engaged or are not working in favor of your values or passions. Career coaching is a great place to explore these issues and to develop an action plan for career success.

Another important aspect of career coaching is that it allows the coach to connect people with their passions, purpose, values and other aspects of their lives that are critical to their finding and being successful in doing their ideal work.

The focus of career coaching is on work related issues. This does not mean the client cannot discuss issues outside work. It is my experience that clients will share a lot about the things they perceive to be impacting their ability to work effectively or taking away from their ability to do their best work or be part of their ideal work industry or even their specialized vocation.

If you have questions about career coaching, I would love to hear your experiences and your journey.

This coming week, I will be facilitating our coach training course module on the models and processes of coaching. I want to share this with you as a way to better understand the value of the coaching process, and how it all comes together for such amazing results. Often people ask me to explain how coaching works and why clients in coaching gets such great results. I like sharing how as a process, coaching works to help clients gain a deeper awareness of themselves and their actions but most importantly their thoughts. It allows them to examine the way they see and think and on what they are focusing their attention on in their lives.

I love using this coaching process umbrella diagram to help beginner coaches and my clients, gain a better understanding of just what coaching can afford them. I see the process unfolding as an agreement to increase awareness of the client goals; and all the other elements under the umbrella are geared towards a concentrated focus on those goals.

Reflections

  • As you reflect on the diagram above, ask yourself the following questions:
  • What is the number one goal in my life at this time?
  • What agreement do I have with myself on attaining this goal?
  • What new awareness is helping me strive to reach my stated goal?
  • What new truths or discovery is yet to be discovered as I work towards this goal?
  • What is my number one responsibility towards reaching this goal?
  • What resources or structures are there in my life to support me in reaching my stated goal?

Action Steps

As you move into action steps, make a list of three things you need to do that will get you closer to reaching your goal in the next week. These do not have to be big steps, they may even be the act of writing down your stated goal and memorizing it and sharing it with someone who could hold you accountable or it may be deciding to work with a coach to help you gain clarity, focus and some decisive action steps to successfully reach your goal.

I wish you peace and wellness. I would love to hear how you are doing with your goals. I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to a Journey with Joyce

Success Wellness Strategy Networking

How are you handling your networks? As social beings we are designed to live, work and socialize in networks of people. One of my favorite authors Stephen Joyce in his book: Teaching the Anthill to Fetch discusses how important it is for us to become adept at harnessing the energy or resources in our networks.

According to Stephen, we use negative assumptions to keep us from engaging more fully in our networks, which in turn prevents us from fully accessing some wonderful possibilities in our lives.

What assumptions do you have about those in your networks? Are they a barrier to you fully engaging and harnessing the energy in your networks? Here are some possible networks most of us have. If you have others, add them below:

  • Family
  • Work
  • Community
  • Friends
  • Church

All networks have cultural rituals and rules for conformity and perpetuation. Rituals such as assigning status to their members, celebrating their achievements and being hospitable to new members ensures and solidarity. How are you positioned for status and hospitality? Is there some way you can harness more positive energy from your network? Status we are told by Neuroscientist is as important to the brain as basic needs. Because of this physiological response to status, most of us crave positive status and affirmation, some will take life threatening risks to be the best or excel. This helps us understand why we go to such lengths to win, to be right or be viewed as popular or well liked by others.

One sure way to improve your status in your network is to master the art of responsible communication and cultural competency to navigate the different rules of various networks. Learning how to how to navigate within networks is something we need to consciously work to improve as we expand our networks.

Without proper networking skills one can quickly become a social outcast. If you have these struggles, Neuroscience has also revealed that our brains are malleable, meaning that we can change our thoughts, train our minds and learn and develop new skills and reshape our brains at any age. Working with an interpersonal wellness coach will also help you develop a higher level capacity to contribute to the wellness of your relationships.

Reflections

Here is how you can determine whether you are gaining the maximum social revenue from your networks. Ask yourself these questions and if you don’t like the answers, do something about it:

  1. Are those in my social network willing to share with me?
  2. Do those in my network know and understand how I can help them?
  3. Is there something I can do to add value to my network that will bring me joy and great satisfaction to others?
  4. Am I giving more time, energy and resources to my networks than I receive back in kind, if so, what is my goal and how long can I afford to do this?
  5. Is there a way that my networks can contribute to my wellness?
  6. Am I experiencing interpersonal conflicts in any of my current networks?
  7. Is my participation in this network a positive thing?
  8. Are those in my social network proud of me and enjoy my company?

So if you are not happy with the answers to the questions above, don’t sulk in silence or blame others. I know what you are thinking, if only that other person wasn’t part of the group. Well let’s see how you can take action

Coaching Actions

Is there one action or skill you need to take or improve to help you better navigate your networks and achieve maximum social revenue? Consider the following action steps:

  1. Make peace with those in your network – ask for forgiveness or to start over
  2. Improve your hospitality by inviting people to lunch or to coffee
  3. Write a short note or send a card to someone in your network letting them know how much you appreciate themimprove ce with those in your network
know what you are thinking, if only that other person wasn’
  4. Work to improve your responsible communication
  5. Learn to improve your cultural competency, groups will not conform to you it often requires some personal adjustment to fit in

Remember you are in the driver’s seat of your life, so if you don’t like what’s happening you are the only one who can make the necessary changes. Please check in with me for a free consultation on how you can increase the social revenue of your network of relationships.

I would love to hear how you are building in wellness success plans that mirror your other areas of life success. Share with me on my blog.

Success and Wellness tip on….

Self-Mastery

Are you mastering your life or is life mastering you? Many clients come to see me because they are being mastered by their circumstances. They are at the mercy of their careers, their family schedules or their conflicts. They have absolutely no time to stop and smell the roses. Often all dimensions of their lives are in deficit, with little room left for self-care. At this point in their life they are overly sensitive and easily irritated. My work with them usually includes attaining a level of self-mastery.

Self-mastery is the essence of living well. It is living with care, so that you have the inner strength to control your impulses, emotions and actions. It is being in tune with yourself and with your life, making time to think critically about your choices, taking inventory of your actions and assessing yourself and your life results against the goals you have outlined for yourself. If you don’t yet have goals, don’t worry. Together we can help you identify some clear goals to provide you with direction and motivation.

Six years ago, I created an integrated model approach to wellness success to help me find more balance and to help me align my wellness. I did not want to end up being widely successful and unwell or too busy to enjoy the important things in my life.

This Wellness System model has helped me live well and I have used it to help many clients find self- mastery and balance, so they can live, work and play well.

Reflections

If you had to score yourself on self-mastery, where would you fall? Are you finding yourself easily flustered and irritated by the small stuff? Do you take time to reflect on your life and assess how well you are living? Do you have goals by which you measure your life successes?

Coaching Questions

  1. Are you happy with your level of self-mastery?
  2. Is there something you can do today to improve your self-mastery?
  3. Is there one thing you can stop doing today that will help you get a step closer to your life goals?

Remember you are in the driver’s seat of your life, so if you don’t like what’s happening you are the only one who can make the necessary changes. Please check in with me for a free consultation on how you can improve your self-mastery.

Spring is the time of year when we clean out the cobwebs in our homes, yards, boats, cottages and garages. In spring time, we get rid of the muck that we collected over the winter months and we embark on renovation projects and clean our closets. Isn’t also a great time to clean our minds and examine our lives? There is an enormous sense of satisfaction and joy that comes from doing these upgrades and renovations. The same thing happens when we clean up our minds by working with a coach.

We tend to see things differently and we gain new perspectives and view our surroundings differently. I too just had some renovations done at my office and I feel very much as I did when I first had the space designed. With this new renovation, I feel energized, refreshed and ready to take on some complex and challenging projects. This is very much the same way I feel when I work with my Coach.

Coaching is Refreshing

Coaching is a process that is refreshing, renewing and that allows one to see the world in a new and different way. It’s a process that helps to clear the mind and cause one to ask questions that change old limiting thoughts and beliefs, by replacing them with new energized thoughts that are more relevant to our future growth and success. After a great coaching session, one feels energized, has clarity in thinking and new perspectives to take on new decisive actions towards their goals. My clients often comment that they feel this way after a great coaching session.

Spring Clean Your Life

It is probably easier to determine if your home needs a good spring cleaning than it is to determine if your life could use a spring tune up. I’ve provided the following questions to help you decide if you could use coaching. Please answer yes or no to each of these questions:

  1. Do you have difficulties concentrating and are easily distracted?
  2. Do you feel unmotivated and unchallenged?
  3. Do you feel incomplete and unclear about what you should do next?
  4. Are you feeling uncertain, upset and confused about a decision you need to make?
  5. Is your daily to-do list getting longer with no end in sight?
  6. Do you need clarity and focus to reach a goal?
  7. Do you feel stuck, mucky and blocked?
  8. Do you need to set a specific goal but can’t seem to get going?
  9. Are you managing the stress in your life well?
  10. Do you feel that you are using your time as efficiently as possible?
  11. Is there a task that you are putting off doing?
  12. Are you in a negative conflict relationship at home or at work?

If you answer yes to any of the above questions then you will find a Certified Coach very helpful in your quest to move forward. Coaching
will put you in a better frame of mind for which to enjoy a beautiful summer, fall and winter. Remember, working with a Coach is an investment that keeps on giving you returns for a long time to come. More about Life Coaching…
